The Gender Persecution Accountability in Afghanistan Working Group (GPWG) has published a fact sheet explaining the recent International Criminal Court arrest warrants for Taliban leaders Haibatullah Akhundzada and Abdul Hakim Haqqani for crimes against humanity, including gender persecution.
The fact sheet provides clear and accessible information on what gender persecution means under international criminal law, how the ICC process works, and why these arrest warrants are an important step toward justice and accountability for women, girls, LGBTQI+ people, and others targeted under the Taliban’s discriminatory policies.
It also highlights how governments, UN bodies, regional institutions, and civil society organizations can support victims, strengthen accountability efforts, and advocate for meaningful participation of Afghan women, girls, and LGBTQI+ people in decisions about Afghanistan’s future.
