Inclusive Protection: The Rights of LGBTQ+ Refugess & Asylum Seekers in the Czech Republic

This toolkit was developed by the Afghanistan LGBTIQ+ Organisation (ALO) to support LGBTIQ+ refugees, asylum seekers, and people with temporary or subsidiary protection in the Czech Republic.

LGBTIQ+ refugees and asylum seekers often face multiple and overlapping forms of discrimination, including racism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, social isolation, language barriers, and limited access to legal information. For many, navigating the asylum and integration system can be confusing, stressful, and unsafe, especially when privacy, gender identity, sexual orientation, or personal safety are not properly respected.

This toolkit provides clear and practical information to help community members understand their rights, navigate asylum procedures, access support, and respond safely to discrimination or abuse. It includes guidance on arrival and registration, reception and accommodation centres, asylum interviews and interpretation, decisions and appeals, detention, work, education, housing, healthcare, mental health, privacy, data protection, and LGBTIQ+-specific asylum claims.

The toolkit is also designed for service providers, legal aid organisations, NGOs, social workers, institutions, and humanitarian actors. It offers practical recommendations on how to make asylum, reception, healthcare, housing, and integration services more inclusive, anti-racist, trauma-informed, and responsive to the lived realities of LGBTIQ+ refugees and asylum seekers.

Grounded in community experiences, legal and policy analysis, and interviews with LGBTIQ+ refugees, asylum seekers, and practitioners, this resource aims to strengthen protection, dignity, and access to justice. It is both a guide for community empowerment and a call to action for institutions and organisations to build a safer, fairer, and more inclusive asylum system in the Czech Republic.

This publication was supported by the IGLYO Grants Programme 2025 and funded by the European Union.
