UN Advocacy

UN Advocacy
ALO's UN Advocacy Work
ALO contributes directly to shaping how the United Nations understands and responds to the human rights situation of LGBTIQ+ people affected by conflict, persecution, and displacement. Our work is grounded in evidence, documentation, and lived expertise, enabling us to bring forward information that is often missing in UN processes. Through consistent engagement, we have helped ensure that the persecution of LGBTIQ+ Afghans is recognized within international reporting, accountability discussions, and diplomatic conversations. Over the past years, ALO has submitted detailed evidence to UN Special Procedures and Treaty Bodies, delivered statements at the Human Rights Council, briefed Member States, and co-organized high-level side events in Geneva. Our contributions have informed UN analyses on Afghanistan, influenced recommendations issued to states, and supported international monitoring of gender-based and SOGIESC-based crimes. We have also played a key role in raising awareness of the protection gaps faced by LGBTIQ+ refugees in transit countries and Europe, ensuring these concerns are included in global protection and humanitarian frameworks.   This work is made possible through donor partnerships that strengthen our ability to bring accurate, community-led information into UN mechanisms, ultimately contributing to more inclusive policies, better monitoring, and stronger accountability for violations.

Four Focus Areas of Our UN Advocacy

Queering Peace & Security

We embed LGBTIQ+ concerns into international Peace and Security agendas, ensuring UN bodies address how conflict, militarization, and extremist regimes uniquely impact queer and trans communities.

Accountability & Justice at the UN

We submit evidence to UN Special Procedures, Treaty Bodies, the Human Rights Council, and other mechanisms to ensure that LGBTIQ+ persecution, including gender-based and SOGIESC-based crimes, is documented, recognized, and acted upon.

Influencing UN Policy & Resolutions

We shape international policies by contributing to UN expert consultations, drafting recommendations, and ensuring LGBTIQ+ protections are embedded across humanitarian, human rights, and displacement frameworks.

Diplomatic Engagement & State Advocacy

We engage directly with Member States, brief diplomats, and build alliances to drive inclusive policies, influence country positions, and strengthen protection commitments for LGBTIQ+ people globally.
