Gender Persecution Working Group (GPWG)
The Gender Persecution in Afghanistan Accountability Working Group (GPWG) is a collaborative international platform dedicated to advancing justice, accountability, and global awareness of gender-based crimes committed in Afghanistan. Co-chaired by the Afghanistan LGBTIQ+ Organization (ALO), MADRE, and CUNNY School of Law, the GPWG brings together Afghan civil society actors, legal experts, academics, and human rights advocates working to ensure that the rights of Afghan women, girls, and LGBTIQ+ individuals remain central in international decision-making and accountability processes.
Since its formation, the GPWG has played a critical role in keeping the crime against humanity of gender persecution visible at the United Nations and other international forums. The Working Group supports documentation efforts, conducts high-level advocacy with states and UN mechanisms, and provides accessible resources to empower Afghan civil society, both inside and outside Afghanistan, to engage meaningfully with international justice processes.
Through regular coordination meetings, knowledge-sharing sessions, joint statements, and the development of practical tools, the GPWG strengthens collective efforts to address the Taliban’s systematic oppression and violations of human rights. The Working Group also supports survivor-centered advocacy, ensuring that those most affected by gender persecution and gender apartheid are heard in spaces where decisions about Afghanistan’s future are being shaped.
At ALO, we are proud to co-lead this initiative and to amplify the voices of Afghan LGBTIQ+ communities within broader advocacy for justice and accountability.
